Arizona - How To Transfer A Title

Transferring Physical Titles:

Before beginning, please note the following:

  • Only use black or blue ink. Any other color will void the title.
  • Do not erase anything or use white-out.
  • Write neatly.
  • Do not use nicknames.
  • Mistakes can void the document.

Arizona Title Transfer

Front of Title:

*Red = Lienholder, Green = Notary*

  1. If applicable, the lienholder will release the lien by entering the required information.
  2. A notary will confirm the lien was released in front of them by entering the required information.

Back of Title:

*Red = Seller, Teal = Buyer, Green = Notary*

  1. The seller enters the buyer's name, address, city, state, zip code, current lienholder, lien amount, lien date, and sale date.
    1. If there is no lienholder, write "NONE."
  2. The seller enters the exact odometer reading.
    1. Don't include tenths of a mile.
    2. Only check boxes 1 or 2 if the mileage is in excess of the odometer's mechanical limits or if the odometer reading is not the actual mileage.
  3. The seller prints and signs their name and enters their address, city, state, and zip code.
  4. A notary enters the required information.
  5. The buyer prints and signs their name.

Transferring eTitles:

eTitle Transfer enables eligible sellers and buyers to transfer vehicle ownership electronically. By using a secure online system, customers can complete the process without needing to visit an MVD office.


Basic requirements for eTitle Transfer:

  • an Arizona vehicle title
  • a current Arizona registration
  • no lien(s) on the vehicle record or added to the vehicle record
  • current emissions, if applicable, or be sold into a non‐emissions area
  • a non‐commercial passenger vehicle
  • no brands or any statuses that prohibit a vehicle transfer

Requirements for both the Buyer and Seller:

  • The seller and buyer each must have Arizona customer records/number with a photo on file
  • The electronic transfer may only be made to a single buyer
  • The seller must be the only owner of record or have an “OR” legal status between current owners
  • Neither the seller or buyer record can have any statuses that prohibit a vehicle transfer
  • The buyer must complete the title and registration process immediately after the seller releases ownership
  • If the seller or buyer has a power of attorney, divorce decree, beneficiary form, or other legal document providing authority to transfer the vehicle, the eTitle Transfer process should not be used
  • The buyer will not be able to apply any exemptions to their registration fees. If the buyer wants an exemption applied, the buyer should not use the eTitle Transfer process

How to Get Started

Seller details:

  1. Create an AZ MVD account or log in to your current account at https://azmvdnow.gov/home
  2. See if your vehicle qualifies
  3. Review and complete the vehicle information section
  4. You will be notified when the buyer approves the vehicle information. You can now release ownership and transfer title
  5. A sold notice will automatically be placed on the vehicle you transferred

Buyer details:

  1. Create an AZ MVD account or log in to your current account at https://azmvdnow.gov/home
  2. Get an E-Title Buyer Code and provide it to the seller to ensure confidentiality during this process
  3. You will be notified to review and approve the information from the seller. This indicates your agreement to proceed with the transfer
  4. You will be notified that the ownership is released. You must title and register your new vehicle to finalize the transfer
  5. Print your temporary registration and license plate

Upon completing the eTitle Transfer process, no paper certificate of title will be issued. The title will remain electronic. If a paper certificate of title is required (for example, when moving out of state), it can be requested separately.
