Montana - How To Transfer A Title
Before beginning, please note the following:
- Only use black or blue ink. Any other color will void the title.
- Do not erase anything or use white-out.
- Write neatly.
- Do not use nicknames.
- Mistakes can void the document.
Montana Title Transfer
Front of Title:
*Red = Seller, Teal = Buyer, Green = Notary*
- The seller enters the name and address of the buyer.
- If there is a co-buyer, the seller will also enter their name.
- The seller enters the exact odometer reading and marks whether the odometer is a 5 or 6-digit odometer, the current date, and their signed and printed name.
- Don't include tenths of a mile.
- Only check boxes 1 or 2 if the mileage is in excess of the odometer's mechanical limits or the reading is not the actual mileage.
- If there is a co-seller, they will also sign and print their name.
- A notary enters the required information.
- The buyer signs and prints their name and enters the date.
Back of Title:
*Teal = Buyer*
- If applicable, the buyer enters the name and address of the lienholder to appear on the new title, the lien amount, and the lien date.
- If there is more than one lienholder, the buyer will also enter the name and address of the lienholder, the lien amount, and the date of the lien.
- If no lienholder exists, write "NONE" on the line above the lienholder information.
- The buyer prints and signs their name and enters their mailing address, city, state, zip code, and the date.
What to Bring to the County Treasurer's Office
- The Original or Duplicate Title
- Bill of Sale
- Bring your PrivateAuto bill of sale.
- Application for Certificate of Title for a Motor Vehicle
- Lien Release Form
- If applicable
- Valid Form of Identification
- Valid Montana Auto Insurance Policy
- Payment for Applicable Fees
