South Carolina - How To Transfer A Title
Before beginning, please note the following:
- Only use black or blue ink. Any other color will void the title.
- Do not erase anything or use white-out.
- Write neatly.
- Do not use nicknames.
- Mistakes can void the document.
South Carolina Title Transfer
Front of Title:
*Red = Lienholder*
- If applicable, the lienholder will enter the required information.
Back of Title:
*Red = Seller, Teal = Buyer*
- The buyer enters the day, month, and year the vehicle was transferred, followed by their name, street, city, state, and zip code. If applicable, they enter the name of the new lienholder, their address, and the date of the lien.
- The seller enters the exact odometer reading.
- Don't include tenths of a mile.
- Only check boxes 1 or 2 if the mileage is in excess of the odometer's mechanical limits or the odometer reading is not the actual mileage.
- The seller enters the date of sale and the sale price.
- The buyer acknowledges the certification made by the seller by signing and printing their name.
- If there is a co-buyer, they will also sign and print their name.
- The seller signs and prints their name and enters their address.
- If there is a co-seller, they will also sign and print their name.
Other Required Documents
- Application for Certificate of Title and Registration
- Bill of Sale (If the original title was issued before June 19, 1989)
- Power of Attorney (If you're signing on behalf of another person)
- Receipt for paid vehicle property tax
Smog/Emissions Test
- Not applicable for the state of South Carolina.
