Texas - How To Transfer A Title
Before beginning, please note the following:
- Only use black or blue ink. Any other color will void the title.
- Do not erase anything or use white-out.
- Write neatly.
- Do not use nicknames.
- Mistakes can void the document.
Texas Title Transfer:
*Red = Lienholder*
Front of Title:
- If applicable, the lienholder will release the lien by filling out the required areas.
- If there is more than one lienholder, they will also release the lien by filling out the required areas.
Back of Title:
*Red = Seller, Teal = Buyer, Green = Lienholder*
- The buyer enters their name, street address, city, state, and zip code.
- The seller enters the exact odometer reading and signs and prints their name.
- Don't include tenths of a mile.
- Only check boxes 1 or 2 if the mileage is in excess of the odometer's mechanical limits or the mileage listed is not the actual mileage.
- The buyer signs and prints their name.
- If applicable, the lienholder to be found on the new title will fill out the required information.
Other Required Documents
- Application for Texas Title and/or Registration
- Proof of paid sales tax
- Only if you've purchased the vehicle outside of Texas
- Proof of valid Texas insurance policy
- Proof of inspection
- Only if there are none on record for the vehicle
