Delaware - How To Transfer A Title

Before beginning, please note the following:

  • Only use black or blue ink. Any other color will void the title.
  • Do not erase anything or use white-out.
  • Write neatly.
  • Do not use nicknames.
  • Mistakes can void the document.

Delaware Title Transfer

*Red = Seller, Green = Lienholder*

  1. If applicable, the lienholder will release the lien by entering the required information.
    1. If there is more than one lienholder, they will also release the lien by entering the required information.
  2. The seller enters the car tag number, manufacturer, year, VIN, selling price, and date. The seller also enters their name, the buyer's name, their address, and the buyer's address.
  3. The seller enters their signature and the exact odometer reading.
    1. Don't include tenths of a mile.

  1. The seller enters the name and address of the buyer and the date of the sale
    1. If there is a co-buyer, the seller will also enter their name.
  2. The seller enters the exact odometer reading. 
    1. Don't include tenths of a mile.
    2. Only check boxes 1 or 2 if the reading is in excess of the odometer's mechanical limits or if the odometer reading is not the actual mileage.
  3. The seller signs and prints their name.
    1. If there is a co-seller, they will also sign their name.
  4. The buyer signs and prints their name.
    1. If there is a co-buyer, they will also sign their name.
  5. If applicable, the buyer will enter the name and address of the lienholder to appear on the new title.
  6. The buyer enters their full name, address, Delaware driver's license, date of birth, and name of the car insurance company and then signs their name and enters the date. 
    1. If there is a co-buyer, they will also print their name, address Delaware driver's license, sign their name, and enter the date.

What to Bring to the DMV

  • Seller's Report of Sale
    • Seller only
    • Found on the back of the registration card.

    • This must be forwarded to the DMV.
  • Proof of Liability Insurance
  • Valid Delaware Driver's License
    • Or two accepted proofs of residency.
  • Payment for Applicable Fees
