Louisiana - How To Transfer A Title

Before beginning, please note the following:

  • Only use black or blue ink. Any other color will void the title.
  • Do not erase anything or use white-out.
  • Write neatly.
  • Do not use nicknames.
  • Mistakes can void the document.

Louisiana Title Transfer

Front of Title:

*Green = Lienholder*

  1. If applicable, the lienholder will release the lien by entering the required information.
    1. If there is more than one lienholder, they will also release the lien by entering the required information.

Back of Title:

*Red = Seller, Teal = Buyer, Green = Notary/Witness*

  1. The seller enters the transfer date, the sale price, and then the name and address of the buyer.
    1. If there is a co-buyer, the seller will also enter their name.
  2. The seller enters the exact odometer reading and signs and prints their name.
    1. Don't include tenths of a mile.
    2. Only check boxes 1 or 2 if the mileage is in excess of the odometer's mechanical limits or if the reading is not the actual mileage.
    3. If there is a co-seller, they will also sign and print their name.
  3. The buyer signs and prints their name.
    1. If there is a co-buyer, they will also sign and print their name.
  4. The seller signs and prints their name.
    1. If there is a co-seller, they will also sign and print their name.
  5. A witness and a notary enters the required information.

What to Bring to the OMV

  • The Original Title
  • Bill of Sale
    • Bring your PrivateAuto bill of sale.
  • Vehicle Application
  • Odometer Disclosure Statement
    • Only if the vehicle is less than ten years old
  • Proof of a Valid Louisiana Auto Insurance Policy
  • Valid Form of Identification
    • For both the buyer and seller.
  • Lien Satisfaction Documents
    • If applicable.
  • Payment for Applicable Fees
