Iowa - How To Transfer A Title
Before beginning, please note the following:
- Only use black or blue ink. Any other color will void the title.
- Do not erase anything or use white-out.
- Write neatly.
- Do not use nicknames.
- Mistakes can void the document.
Iowa Title Transfer
Front of Title:
*Green = Lienholder*
- If applicable, the lienholder will release the lien by entering the required information.
- If there is more than one lienholder, they will also release the lien by entering the required information.
Back of Title:
*Red = Seller, Teal= Buyer*
- The seller enters the exact odometer reading, checks the box stating that the odometer reading is the actual mileage, and enters the date of the sale.
- Don't include tenths of a mile.
- Only check boxes 2 or 3 if the mileage is in excess of the odometer's mechanical limits or the odometer reading is not the actual mileage.
- The seller fills out the damage disclosure section by answering questions 1 and 2 and then signs and prints their name.
- If there is a co-seller, they will also sign and print their name.
- The buyer signs and prints their name.
- If there is a co-buyer, they will also sign and print their name.
What to Bring to the County Treasurer's Office
- The Original Title
- Copy of the Vehicle's Previous Registration
- Application for Certificate of Title and/or Registration
- Damage Disclosure Statement
- Only if the vehicle is seven years old or less.
- Lienholder Information
- If applicable.
- Payment for Applicable Fees
