Kentucky - How To Transfer A Title
Before beginning, please note the following:
- Only use black or blue ink. Any other color will void the title.
- Do not erase anything or use white-out.
- Write neatly.
- Do not use nicknames.
- Mistakes can void the document.
Kentucky Title Transfer
Front of Title:
*Green = Lienholder*
- If applicable, the lienholder will release the lien by entering the required information.
- If there is more than one lienholder, they will also release the lien by entering the required information.
- If there is more than one lienholder, they will also release the lien by entering the required information.
Back of Title:
*Red = Seller, Teal = Buyer, Green = Notary*
- The seller enters the exact odometer reading, signs and prints their name, and enters the date of the transfer.
- Don't include tenths of a mile.
- Only check boxes 1 or 2 if the mileage is in excess of the odometer's mechanical limits or the odometer reading is not the actual mileage.
- If there is a co-seller, they will also sign and print their name.
- The buyer signs and prints their name.
- If there is a co-buyer, they will also sign and print their name.
- A notary will enter the required information.
- The seller enters the sale price and the date of the sale.
- The seller enters their name, street address, phone number, city, county, state, and zip code.
- The buyer enters their name, social security number, birth month, address, city, county, state, and zip code.
- If there is a co-buyer, they will also enter their name, social security number, and birth month.
- If applicable, the buyer will mark that they will apply for a loan, and enter their name, address, city, county, state, and zip code, as well as the name, address, and county that the lien is to be filed in.
- If the buyer has not applied for a loan, mark "have not," and mark whether or not they will or will not apply for a loan within the next 30 days.
- The seller prints and signs their name.
- If there is a co-seller, they will also sign and print their name.
- The buyer prints and signs their name.
- If there is a co-buyer, they will also print and sign their name.
- A notary will enter the required information under the seller and buyer.
What to Bring to the County Clerk's Office
- The Original Title
- Application for Kentucky Certificate of Title or Registration
- Proof of a Valid Kentucky Auto Insurance Policy
- Payment for Applicable Fees
*Note that if the name listed on the title is different than the name on your ID, you must provide an affidavit showing they are the same.
