Failure to provide the following can delay the registration process.

  • Properly Filled Out Title
  • Bill of Sale
    • Bring your PrivateAuto bill of sale.
    • If you have questions regarding the bill of sale, contact your local DMV.
  • Application for Registration
  • Application for Certificate of Title and Registration
    • Only required if the vehicle was not previously titled in Virginia.
  • Proof of Identity and Address
  • Valid Virginia Auto Insurance Policy
    • If you don't have auto insurance, you can pay the $500 uninsured motorist fee.
  • Safety Inspection
    • The state of Virginia requires all vehicles to pass a safety inspection.

    • The state of Virginia requires all vehicles to pass an emissions test, with some exceptions.

*Residents of Nebraska have 30 days from the purchase date to register their vehicle.
