Maine - How To Transfer A Title

Before beginning, please note the following:

  • Only use black or blue ink. Any other color will void the title.
  • Do not erase anything or use white-out.
  • Write neatly.
  • Do not use nicknames.
  • Mistakes can void the document.

Maine Title Transfer

Front of Title:

*Green = Lienholder*

  1. If applicable, the lienholder will release the lien by entering the required information.
    1. If there is more than one lienholder, they will also release the lien by entering the required information.

Back of Title:

*Red = Seller, Teal = Buyer*

  1. The seller enters the buyer's name, address, and zip code, as well as the date of the sale.
    1. If there is a co-buyer, the seller will also enter their name.
  2. The seller enters the exact odometer reading, their signed and printed name, date, address, and zip code.
    1. Don't include tenths of a mile.
    2. Only check boxes 1 or 2 if the mileage is in excess of the odometer's mechanical limits or if the reading is not the actual mileage.
    3. If there is a co-seller, they will also sign and print their name.
  3. If applicable, the buyer will enter the name, address, and zip code of the lienholder to appear on the new lien and then enter the date of the lien and their signature.
    1. If there is a co-buyer, they will also sign their name.

What to Bring to the BMV

  • The Original or Duplicate Title
  • Bill of Sale
    • Bring your PrivateAuto bill of sale.
  • Vehicle Title Application
    • Must be obtained from your local Maine BMV
  • Proof of Lien Satisfaction
    • If applicable
  • Valid Form of Identification
  • Valid Maine Auto Insurance Policy
  • Payment for Applicable Fees
