Maine - How To Transfer A Title
Before beginning, please note the following:
- Only use black or blue ink. Any other color will void the title.
- Do not erase anything or use white-out.
- Write neatly.
- Do not use nicknames.
- Mistakes can void the document.
Maine Title Transfer
Front of Title:
*Green = Lienholder*
- If applicable, the lienholder will release the lien by entering the required information.
- If there is more than one lienholder, they will also release the lien by entering the required information.
Back of Title:
*Red = Seller, Teal = Buyer*
- The seller enters the buyer's name, address, and zip code, as well as the date of the sale.
- If there is a co-buyer, the seller will also enter their name.
- The seller enters the exact odometer reading, their signed and printed name, date, address, and zip code.
- Don't include tenths of a mile.
- Only check boxes 1 or 2 if the mileage is in excess of the odometer's mechanical limits or if the reading is not the actual mileage.
- If there is a co-seller, they will also sign and print their name.
- If applicable, the buyer will enter the name, address, and zip code of the lienholder to appear on the new lien and then enter the date of the lien and their signature.
- If there is a co-buyer, they will also sign their name.
What to Bring to the BMV
- The Original or Duplicate Title
- Bill of Sale
- Bring your PrivateAuto bill of sale.
- Vehicle Title Application
- Must be obtained from your local Maine BMV
- Proof of Lien Satisfaction
- If applicable
- Valid Form of Identification
- Valid Maine Auto Insurance Policy
- Payment for Applicable Fees
