Maryland - How To Transfer A Title

Before beginning, please note the following:

  • Only use black or blue ink. Any other color will void the title.
  • Do not erase anything or use white-out.
  • Write neatly.
  • Do not use nicknames.
  • Mistakes can void the document.

Maryland Title Transfer

Front of Title:

*Green = Lienholder*

  1. If applicable, the lienholder will release the lien by entering the required information.

Back of Title:

*Red = Seller, Teal = Buyer*

  1. The seller enters the name, street address, city, county, state, and zip code.
    1. If there is a co-buyer, the seller will also enter their name, street address, city, county, state, and zip code.
  2. The seller enters the exact odometer reading, selling price, date of the sale, and their printed name and signature.
    1. Don't include tenths of a mile.
    2. Only check boxes 1 or 2 if the mileage is in excess of the odometer's mechanical limits or the reading is not the actual mileage.
    3. If there is a co-seller, they will also sign and print their name.
  3. The buyer signs and prints their name.
    1. If there is a co-buyer, they will also sign and print their name.
  4. The buyer enters their name, street address, city, county, state, and zip code.
    1. If there is a co-buyer, they will also enter their name, street address, city, county, state, and zip code.
  5. The buyer enters their Maryland driver's license, and, if applicable, the buyer enters the amount, date, kind of lien, and the lienholder's name and address.
    1. If the buyer doesn't have a driver's license, provide the date of birth.
    2. If the vehicle is not subject to a lien, write "NONE."
  6. The buyer checks whether they are applying for a new title and tags, a new title and a transfer of tags, or a new title only.
    1. If you are buying a motorcycle, list the engine number
    2. If you are transferring tags from your previous vehicle, enter the class of vehicle, the tag number, VIN, and the name and address of the person you sold your old vehicle to.
  7. The buyer enters the name of their auto insurance provider, policy number, and insurance agent's name.
  8. The buyer marks if the vehicle is to be titled as joint tenants or tenants by interest and then enters the day, month, and year.
  9. The buyer signs and prints their name.
    1. If there is a co-buyer, they will also sign and print their name.

What to Bring to the MVA

  • The Original or Duplicate Title
  • Bill of Sale
    • Bring your PrivateAuto bill of sale.
  • Application for Certificate of Title
  • Inspection Certificate
  • Proof of a Passed Emissions Test
  • Lien Release
    • If applicable.
  • Proof of Identification
  • Proof of Maryland Residency
  • Valid Maryland Auto Insurance Policy
  • Payment for Applicable Fees
