Minnesota - How To Transfer A Title
Before beginning, please note the following:
- Only use black or blue ink. Any other color will void the title.
- Do not erase anything or use white-out.
- Write neatly.
- Do not use nicknames.
- Mistakes can void the document.
Minnesota Title Transfer
Front of Title:
*Red = Seller, Teal = Buyer*
- The seller enters the exact odometer reading and checks box 1, stating the reading entered is the actual mileage.
- Don't include tenths of a mile.
- Only check boxes 2 or 3 if the mileage is in excess of the odometer's mechanical limits or if the reading is not the actual mileage.
- The seller completes the damage disclosure statement by checking the boxes that apply to the vehicle.
- The seller signs and prints their name and enters the date of sale and address.
- If there is a co-seller, they will also print and sign their name.
- The buyer prints and signs their name and enters their address.
- If there is a co-buyer, they will also sign and print their name.
Back of Title:
*Teal = Buyer*
- The buyer enters their last, first, and middle name, date of birth, driver's license number, street address, city, county, state, and zip code.
- If there is a co-buyer, they will also enter their last, first, and middle name, date of birth, and driver's license number.
- If applicable, check "YES" stating that vehicle is subject to a lien; enter the lienholder's name, date of the lien agreement, street address, city, state, and zip code.
- If the vehicle is not subject to a lien, check "NO."
- The buyer signs their name.
- If there is a co-buyer, they will also sign their name.
What to Bring to the Deputy Registrar's Office
- The Original or Duplicate Title
- VIN Verification
- Proof of Lien Satisfaction
- If applicable.
- Valid Form of Identification
- Valid Minnesota Auto Insurance Policy
- Proof of Minnesota Residency
- Payment for Applicable Fees
