New Jersey - How To Transfer A Title
Before beginning, please note the following:
- Only use black or blue ink. Any other color will void the title.
- Do not erase anything or use white-out.
- Write neatly.
- Do not use nicknames.
- Mistakes can void the document.
New Jersey Title Transfer
Front of Title:
*Green = Lienholder*
- If applicable, the lienholder will release the lien by entering the required information.
- If there is more than one lienholder, they will also release the lien by entering the required information.
Back of Title:
*Red = Seller, Teal = Buyer*
- The seller enters the exact odometer reading.
- Don't include tenths of a mile.
- Only check boxes 1 or 2 if the mileage is in excess of the odometer's mechanical limits or the reading is not the actual mileage.
- The buyer prints their name, address, and driver's license number.
- If there is a co-buyer, they will also enter their name, address, and driver's license number.
- If applicable, the buyer will enter the name and address of the lienholder to appear on the new title.
- The seller prints their name, address, date of the sale, and the sale price.
- The seller prints and signs their name and enters the date of the odometer statement.
- If there is a co-seller, they will also print and sign their name.
- The buyer prints and signs their name.
- If there is a co-buyer, they will also print and sign their name.
What to Bring to the MVC
- The Original or Duplicate Title
- Valid New Jersey Auto Insurance Policy
- Payment for Applicable Fees
