New Jersey - How To Transfer A Title

Before beginning, please note the following:

  • Only use black or blue ink. Any other color will void the title.
  • Do not erase anything or use white-out.
  • Write neatly.
  • Do not use nicknames.
  • Mistakes can void the document.

New Jersey Title Transfer

Front of Title:

*Green = Lienholder*

  1. If applicable, the lienholder will release the lien by entering the required information.
    1. If there is more than one lienholder, they will also release the lien by entering the required information.

Back of Title:

*Red = Seller, Teal = Buyer*

  1. The seller enters the exact odometer reading.
    1. Don't include tenths of a mile.
    2. Only check boxes 1 or 2 if the mileage is in excess of the odometer's mechanical limits or the reading is not the actual mileage.
  2. The buyer prints their name, address, and driver's license number.
    1. If there is a co-buyer, they will also enter their name, address, and driver's license number.
  3. If applicable, the buyer will enter the name and address of the lienholder to appear on the new title.
  4. The seller prints their name, address, date of the sale, and the sale price.
  5. The seller prints and signs their name and enters the date of the odometer statement.
    1. If there is a co-seller, they will also print and sign their name.
  6. The buyer prints and signs their name.
    1. If there is a co-buyer, they will also print and sign their name.

What to Bring to the MVC

  • The Original or Duplicate Title
  • Valid New Jersey Auto Insurance Policy
  • Payment for Applicable Fees
