North Carolina - How To Transfer A Title
Before beginning, please note the following:
- Only use black or blue ink. Any other color will void the title.
- Do not erase anything or use white-out.
- Write neatly.
- Do not use nicknames.
- Mistakes can void the document.
North Carolina Title Transfer
Front of Title:
*Green = Lienholder*
- If applicable, the lienholder will release the lien by entering the required information.
- If there is more than one lienholder, they will also release the lien by entering the required information.
Back of Title:
*Red = Seller, Teal = Buyer, Purple = Notary, Green = Lienholder*
- The seller enters the name and address of the buyer.
- The seller enters the exact odometer reading, completes the damage disclaimer section, enters the vehicle delivery date, and signs and prints their name.
- Don't include tenths of a mile.
- Only check boxes 1 or 2 if the mileage is in excess of the odometer's mechanical limits or the reading is not the actual mileage.
- If there is a co-seller, they will also sign and print their name.
- A notary enters the required information.
- The buyer signs and prints their name.
- If there is a co-buyer, they will also sign and print their name.
- Buyer fills out the application for a new certificate of title by checking the boxes, filling out the information that applies to you, and then signing.
- If there is a co-buyer, they will also enter their full legal name.
- The buyer enters their driver's license number, legal first, middle, and last name, address, city, zip code, and county.
- If there is a co-buyer, they will also enter their driver's license number and first, middle, and last name.
- Only fill out the mail address line if it differs from your residence address.
- Only fill out the vehicle location address if it differs from your residence address.
- If applicable, the lienholder's information to appear on the new title is entered.
- If there is more than one lienholder, their information will also be entered.
- The buyer enters their auto insurance company, policy number, and the odometer reading and signs their name.
- If there is a co-buyer, they will also sign their name.
- The notary will enter the required information.
Other Required Information
- Proof of a Valid North Carolina Auto Insurance Policy
- Lien Release Form
- If applicable
- Odometer Disclosure Statement
- Only if the vehicle is less than ten years old
