North Carolina - How To Transfer A Title

Before beginning, please note the following:

• Only use black or blue ink. Any other color will void the title.
• Do not erase anything or use white-out.
• Write neatly.
• Do not use nicknames.
• Mistakes can void the document.

North Carolina Title Transfer

Front of Title:

*Green = Lienholder*

1. If applicable, the lienholder will release the lien by entering the required information.
   1. If there is more than one lienholder, they will also release the lien by entering the required information.

Back of Title:

*Red = Seller, Teal = Buyer, Purple = Notary, Green = Lienholder*

1. The seller enters the name and address of the buyer.
2. The seller enters the exact odometer reading, completes the damage disclaimer section, enters the vehicle delivery date, and signs and prints their name.
   1. Don't include tenths of a mile.
   2. Only check boxes 1 or 2 if the mileage is in excess of the odometer's mechanical limits or the reading is not the actual mileage.
   3. If there is a co-seller, they will also sign and print their name.
3. A notary enters the required information.
4. The buyer signs and prints their name.
   1. If there is a co-buyer, they will also sign and print their name.
5. Buyer fills out the application for a new certificate of title by checking the boxes, filling out the information that applies to you, and then signing.
   1. If there is a co-buyer, they will also enter their full legal name.
6. The buyer enters their driver's license number, legal first, middle, and last name, address, city, zip code, and county.
   1. If there is a co-buyer, they will also enter their driver's license number and first, middle, and last name.
   2. Only fill out the mail address line if it differs from your residence address.
   3. Only fill out the vehicle location address if it differs from your residence address.
7. If applicable, the lienholder's information to appear on the new title is entered.
   1. If there is more than one lienholder, their information will also be entered.
8. The buyer enters their auto insurance company, policy number, and the odometer reading and signs their name.
   1. If there is a co-buyer, they will also sign their name.
9. The notary will enter the required information.

• Proof of a Valid North Carolina Auto Insurance Policy
• Lien Release Form
  • If applicable
• Odometer Disclosure Statement
  • Only if the vehicle is less than ten years old
