North Dakota - How To Transfer A Title
Before beginning, please note the following:
- Only use black or blue ink. Any other color will void the title.
- Do not erase anything or use white-out.
- Write neatly.
- Do not use nicknames.
- Mistakes can void the document.
North Dakota Title Transfer
Front of Title:
*Red = Seller, Teal = Buyer, Green = Lienholder*
- The seller enters the first, middle, and last names of the seller and their address, city, state, zip code, county, and phone number. The seller also marks whether there will be joint tenants and enters the sale price.
- If there is a co-buyer, the seller will also enter their first, middle, and last names.
- The seller enters the exact odometer reading and the date of the sale.
- Don't include tenths of a mile.
- Only check boxes 1 or 2 if the mileage is in excess of the odometer's mechanical limits or the reading is not the actual mileage.
- The seller signs and prints their name and enters the date.
- If there is a co-seller, they will also sign and print their name and enter the date.
- The buyer signs and prints their name and enters the date.
- If there is a co-buyer, they will also sign and print their name and enter the date.
- If applicable, the lienholder will release the lien by entering the required information.
Back of Title:
*Teal = Buyer*
- The buyer will complete the Purchaser's Certification and Application
- If applicable, the buyer will enter the lienholder's mailing address, city, state, and zip code to appear on the new title and then enter their signature.
- If there is more than one lienholder, the buyer will also enter their mailing address, city, state, and zip code.
- If there is a co-buyer, they will also sign their name.
Other Required Documents
- Application for Certificate of Title and Registration of a Vehicle
- Damage/Salvage Disclosure Statement
- Only if the vehicle is less than nine years old.
Smog/Emissions Test
- Not applicable to the state of North Dakota.
