Rhode Island - How To Transfer A Title
Before beginning, please note the following:
- Only use black or blue ink. Any other color will void the title.
- Do not erase anything or use white-out.
- Write neatly.
- Do not use nicknames.
- Mistakes can void the document.
Rhode Island Title Transfer
Front of Title:
*Red = Lienholder*
- If applicable, the lienholder will release the lien by entering the required information.
- If there is a second lienholder, they will also release the lien by entering the required information.
Back of Title:
*Red = Seller, Teal = Buyer*
- The buyer enters their name, address, and, if applicable, the new lienholder's name and address, along with the date of the lien.
- The seller enters the exact odometer reading and signs and prints their name.
- Don't include tenths of a mile.
- Only check boxes 1 or 2 if the mileage is in excess of its mechanical limits or if the odometer reading is not the actual mileage.
- If there is a co-seller, they will also sign and print their name.
- The buyer signs and prints their name.
- If there is a co-buyer, they will also sign and print their name.

- Application for Registration and Title Certificate
- Proof of Auto Insurance
- Use Tax Return
- Bill of Sale
- VIN Inspection Proof (If the vehicle was purchased out of state.)
