South Dakota - How To Transfer A Title

Before beginning, please note the following:

  • Only use black or blue ink. Any other color will void the title.
  • Do not erase anything or use white-out.
  • Write neatly.
  • Do not use nicknames.
  • Mistakes can void the document.

South Dakota Title Transfer

Front of Title:

*Green = Lienholder*

  1. If applicable, the lienholder will release the lien by entering the required information.
    1. If there is more than one lienholder, they will also release the lien by entering the required information.

Back of Title:

*Red = Seller, Teal = Buyer*

  1. The buyer enters their name, type of ownership, driver's license number or social security number, city, state, and zip code.
    1. If there is a co-buyer, they will also enter their name, type of ownership, and their driver's license number or social security number, city, state, and zip code.
  2. If applicable, the buyer enters the name, address, city, state, and zip code of the lienholder to appear on the new title.
  3. The seller enters the exact odometer reading.
    1. Don't include tenths of a mile.
    2. Only check boxes 1 or 2 if the mileage is in excess of the odometer's mechanical limits or the reading is not the actual mileage.
    3. This section only needs to be completed if the vehicle is less than ten years old.
  4. The seller completes the damage disclosure.
    1. This section only needs to be completed if the vehicle is less than seven years old.
  5. The seller enters the sale date, sale price, their printed name, and signature, and their city, state, and zip code. 
    1. If there is a co-seller, they will also print and sign their name.
  6. The buyer prints and signs their name.

  • Proof of Lien

Smog/Emissions Test

  • Not applicable to the state of South Dakota.
