South Dakota - How To Transfer A Title
Before beginning, please note the following:
- Only use black or blue ink. Any other color will void the title.
- Do not erase anything or use white-out.
- Write neatly.
- Do not use nicknames.
- Mistakes can void the document.
South Dakota Title Transfer
Front of Title:
*Green = Lienholder*
- If applicable, the lienholder will release the lien by entering the required information.
- If there is more than one lienholder, they will also release the lien by entering the required information.
Back of Title:
*Red = Seller, Teal = Buyer*
- The buyer enters their name, type of ownership, driver's license number or social security number, city, state, and zip code.
- If there is a co-buyer, they will also enter their name, type of ownership, and their driver's license number or social security number, city, state, and zip code.
- If applicable, the buyer enters the name, address, city, state, and zip code of the lienholder to appear on the new title.
- The seller enters the exact odometer reading.
- Don't include tenths of a mile.
- Only check boxes 1 or 2 if the mileage is in excess of the odometer's mechanical limits or the reading is not the actual mileage.
- This section only needs to be completed if the vehicle is less than ten years old.
- The seller completes the damage disclosure.
- This section only needs to be completed if the vehicle is less than seven years old.
- The seller enters the sale date, sale price, their printed name, and signature, and their city, state, and zip code.
- If there is a co-seller, they will also print and sign their name.
- The buyer prints and signs their name.
