Maine Vehicle Registration

Failure to provide the following can delay the registration process.

  • Properly Filled Out Title
  • Bill of Sale
    • Bring your PrivateAuto bill of sale.
    • If you have questions regarding the bill of sale, contact your local BMV.
  • White and Yellow Copies of the Registration Application
    • Available at your local town office.
  • Payment for Excise Tax
    • This tax is a municipal tax and is to be submitted at your local town office.
    • Contact your local municipal office for more information. 
  • Name and Address of Lienholder
    • If applicable.
  • Valid Form of Identification
  • Valid Maine Auto Insurance Policy
  • Emissions Test
    • Emissions tests are only required for residents of Cumberland County.

  • Payment for all Applicable Taxes and Fees
    • Click here to view fees or contact your local BMV.

*Residents of Maine have 30 days from the purchase date to register their vehicle.

*If your municipality does not participate in Maine's registration program, you must visit your nearest BMV.
