Maine Vehicle Registration
Failure to provide the following can delay the registration process.
- Properly Filled Out Title
- Bill of Sale
- Bring your PrivateAuto bill of sale.
- If you have questions regarding the bill of sale, contact your local BMV.
- White and Yellow Copies of the Registration Application
- Available at your local town office.
- Payment for Excise Tax
- This tax is a municipal tax and is to be submitted at your local town office.
- Contact your local municipal office for more information.
- Name and Address of Lienholder
- If applicable.
- Valid Form of Identification
- Valid Maine Auto Insurance Policy
- Emissions Test
- Emissions tests are only required for residents of Cumberland County.

- Payment for all Applicable Taxes and Fees
*Residents of Maine have 30 days from the purchase date to register their vehicle.
*If your municipality does not participate in Maine's registration program, you must visit your nearest BMV.
