New Jersey Vehicle Registration

Failure to provide the following can delay the registration process.

  • Properly Filled Out Title
  • Bill of Sale
    • Bring your PrivateAuto bill of sale
    • If you have questions regarding the bill of sale, contact your local MVC.
  • Valid New Jersey Auto Insurance Policy
  • Odometer Reading
    • A $25 fee will be issued if you don't provide the odometer reading within ten days of purchasing the vehicle.
  • Proof of Social Security Number
  • New Jersey Driver's License Number
    • If you don't have a driver's license, you must provide six points worth of identification.
  • Application for Vehicle Registration
  • Emissions Test
    • The state of New Jersey requires emissions testing, with some exceptions.

*Residents of New Jersey have 10 business days from the purchase date to register their vehicle.
