Failure to provide the following can delay the registration process.

  • Properly Filled out Title
    • The ORIGINAL title is required for vehicle years 2001 or newer.
  • Bill of Sale
    • Bring your PrivateAuto bill of sale.
    • If you have questions regarding the bill of sale, contact your local DMV.
  • Application for Registration and Certificate of Title
  • Valid Rhode Island Auto Insurance Policy
  • Valid Rhode Island Driver's License or ID Card
  • Use Tax Form
  • Gross Vehicle Weight
    • Found on the driver's side door
  • Proof of Previous Owner
    • Only for non-title vehicles.
  • VIN Check
    • Only required for vehicle years 2001 and newer or vehicles with an out-of-state title.
  • Safety Inspection
    • All newly registered vehicles must have a Rhode Island inspection certificate.
  • Emissions Test
    • The state of Rhode Island requires vehicles to pass an emissions test.
