Alabama - How To Transfer A Title
Before beginning, please note the following:
- Only use black or blue ink. Any other color will void the title.
- Do not erase anything or use white-out.
- Write neatly.
- Do not use nicknames.
- Mistakes can void the document.
Alabama Title Transfer
Front of Title:
*Red = Lienholder*
- If applicable, the lienholder will release the lien by entering the required information.
- If there is more than one lienholder, they will also release the lien by entering the required information.
Back of Title:
*Red = Seller, Teal = Buyer*
- The seller enters the date the car was transferred to the new owner, the buyer's name, and the buyer's address.
- If there is a co-buyer, the seller will also enter their name.
- The seller enters the exact odometer reading.
- Don't include tenths of a mile.
- Only check boxes 1 or 2 if the mileage is in excess of the odometer's mechanical limits or the mileage stated is not the actual mileage.
- The buyer signs and prints their name and, if applicable, enters the name and address of the lienholder to appear on the new title.
- If there is a co-buyer, they will also sign and print their name.
- The seller signs and prints their name.
- If there is a co-seller, they will also sign and print their name.
Things to Bring to the DMV
- Application for Replacement Title
- Valid Alabama Auto Insurance Policy
- Buyer's Valid Driver's License
- Proof of Residency
- Payment for Applicable Fees
