Alabama - How To Transfer A Title

Before beginning, please note the following:

• Only use black or blue ink. Any other color will void the title.
• Do not erase anything or use white-out.
• Write neatly.
• Do not use nicknames.
• Mistakes can void the document.

Alabama Title Transfer

Front of Title:

*Red = Lienholder*

1. If applicable, the lienholder will release the lien by entering the required information.
   1. If there is more than one lienholder, they will also release the lien by entering the required information.

Back of Title:

*Red = Seller, Teal =  Buyer*

1. The seller enters the date the car was transferred to the new owner, the buyer's name, and the buyer's address.
   1. If there is a co-buyer, the seller will also enter their name.
2. The seller enters the exact odometer reading.
   1. Don't include tenths of a mile.
   2. Only check boxes 1 or 2 if the mileage is in excess of the odometer's mechanical limits or the mileage stated is not the actual mileage. 
3. The buyer signs and prints their name and, if applicable, enters the name and address of the lienholder to appear on the new title.
   1. If there is a co-buyer, they will also sign and print their name.
4. The seller signs and prints their name.
   1. If there is a co-seller, they will also sign and print their name.

Things to Bring to the DMV

• Application for Replacement Title
• Valid Alabama Auto Insurance Policy
• Buyer's Valid Driver's License
• Proof of Residency
• Payment for Applicable Fees
